Here are our essential tips for protecting your tyres, maximising their lifespan, and optimising their performance and driver comfort.

Ensure that your tyres are properly inflated

Keeping your tyre pressure at the optimal level is one of the most important things that you can do, both for their durability and, most importantly, for the safety of the vehicle.

Under or overinflated tyres can both result in uneven wear on your tyres and reduce your fuel efficiency, not to mention meaning that you will need to have them replaced far sooner than would otherwise have been required.

Avoid excess weight

The heavier your vehicle is, the higher the risk of a blowout and the faster the wear will be. Check the manufacturers handbook for information about the max weight that is recommended for your vehicle and make sure that you are not exceeding it.

If you have any concerns that your vehicle might not be road legal based on the weight of the load, avoid driving it at all until you have clarification. This would only put other road users at risk and could land you in seriously hot legal water.

Remember correct tyre storage

Many of use have two or more sets of tyres that we rotate over the year based on the climate. Having both summer and winter tyres is a great idea for fuel efficiency and safety but you need to make sure that you are storing your spare set safely when they are not being used.

Avoid going too fast

There are better reasons to abide by the speed limit than prolonging the life of your tyres, but it is still a nice benefit to have!

Speeding creates more heat between your tyres and the road beneath them, increasing the speed of wear by a considerable amount. Why do you think F1 drivers have to pop on a new set of tyres after just a few short laps? Going 200mph plus isn’t exactly great tyre management!
